Grand Rapids man critically injured in shooting near GVSU; 2 people in custody

It was a scary moment for students at Grand Valley State University after an alert detailing a shooting was sent early Saturday, Oct. 1.

ALLENDALE, MICH. - Two people are in custody in connection with a shooting early Saturday morning in Allendale Township.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, a 28-year-old Grand Rapids man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Capt. Valerie Weiss says the shooting happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Lake Michigan Avenue around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.

Witnesses called 911 after hearing gunshots.  Deputies found the victim in the parking lot, conscious and alert, but with serious injuries.

The victim has undergone surgery and is currently in serious condition.

Neighboring tenants told WZZM 13's Meghan Bunchman that the car connected with the shooting frequents the complex's parking lot to conduct suspicious activity.

"It comes here [and] it stops," said tenant Zachary Stewart. "It has other cars meet him and then leaves."

The victim is not a tenant at the Lake Michigan Drive Apartments and is also not a student at GVSU.

Grand Valley State University officials sent an alert to students overnight.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office at 616-738-4022 or Silent Observer at 877-887-4563.
