1 person shot in stomach on Grand Rapids' Southeast Side; suspect arrested

A 45-year-old man is still alive but police say it's not certain he will survive after he was shot this evening in Southeast Grand Rapids.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Police arrested a person suspected of shooting someone as they got out of their car on the city's Southeast Side.

Officers were sent just before 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, to the area of Eastern Avenue and Ballard Street SE on a report of someone shot and down on the ground.

The victim is a 45-year-old man who is in surgery at a Grand Rapids hospital for a life-threatening injury to the stomach, police Sgt. Terry Dixon said.

It's believed the suspect was sitting on a porch on Ballard Street when the victim was fired upon as they stepped out of a car, Dixon said.

A SWAT unit joined to assist the responding officers, and they were heard calling for a person out of a home. Police arrested one person; there is another person of interest connected with the shooting whom police are talking to, Dixon said.

Anyone with additional information can call the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616-456-3400 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
