Cooking cause of apt. fire that injured 3, displaced dozens

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Fire investigators say unattended cooking caused a fire the swept through an apartment complex, severely injuring three people.

The fire started in a first floor apartment kitchen Saturday afternoon in the 2800 block of Marshall Avenue SE, just south of 28th Street.

Firefighters had to use ladders to rescue several residents, three of whom suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation. The blaze also displaced 25 residents from their homes.

The Grand Rapids Fire departments wants to remind residents to remain near the kitchen while cooking on a stove top and to make sure they have working smoke alarms.
