Grand Rapids police barricade situation ends, suspect not located

Search ends for suspected gunman

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Grand Rapids police have wrapped up its search after a barricade situation on the city's Southeast Side.

Police asked residents in the area of Collins Avenue and Griggs Street SE to stay inside Sunday, Oct. 23. The public was asked to avoid the neighborhood entirely while police investigated.

Officers reportedly told a resident that a gunman from an earlier shots fired report at Garfield Park was inside one of the houses in the neighborhood.

Police set up a perimeter and while setting up, officers saw an individual matching the suspect's description inside a home.

Backup was called in thereafter. After four hours of attempting to get in contact with the suspect, officers entered the home, but found no one.

The suspect is described only as a male in his early 20's.

The earlier shots fired report came in around 3:30 p.m., with an additional report of a person laying on the ground, Grand Rapids Police Lt. Pat Merrill said.

Call GRPD or the Silent Observer, 616-774-2345, if you have any information.
