GRPD investigating suspicious death of 18-year-old woman

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Grand Rapids police are investigating the suspicious death of an 18-year-old woman on the city's Southeast Side.

Officers were called to Kalamazoo Avenue just South of Franklin around 7 p.m. Monday, March 20, on a report of a shooting.

Once they arrived in the area they found the 18-year-old victim with a gunshot wound.

Sgt. John Wittkowski says around 15 people were in apartment when the shooting happened. Only one person was left in the apartment with the victim when officers arrived. That person is being questioned by police.

Wittkowski says they do not have anyone in custody for the shooting. He adds that police have been to the apartment building in the past and they consider it a "problem residence."

People that live in the area are disputing the information from police.

They tell WZZM 13's Amir Abbas the victim is a 16-year-old girl. They also say the death was accidental.

The GRPD says they will release the name and cause of death on Tuesday.
