John Ball Zoo set to open for the season

John Ball Zoo trains otters ahead of opening day

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - John Ball Zoo is opening for the season at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 11 -- guests attending can expect to see the majority of the animals including tigers, chimpanzees, pumas, bobcats and grizzly bears.

This week, zoo keeper Jaime Racalla worked with some of the otters to get them ready for the season.

"We like to work with them inside toward veterinary procedures," Racalla said. "We ask them different behaviors so we can see different parts of their body and so we can also eventually touch different parts of their body, giving them any kind of shots or vaccines they might need."

They also train the otters outside for visitors to see.

Guests can catch the otter training three days a week. The schedule is posted on the daily animal program board.

Visit the zoo's website for more information about its activities.
