GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, MICH. - UPDATE: Monday afternoon Stephen D. Cohle, MD, Kent County's Chief Medical Examiner determined that Mekhi Davon Ivy died from asphyxiation by drowning.
Ottawa County Deputies say it was a regular or traditional drowning not a dry drowning. The incident is still under investigation.
ORIGINAL STORY: Despite medics trying to save the life of a child who nearly drowned this weekend in an Ottawa County pool, police say he recently died.
Mekhi Davon Ivy, an 8-year-old Jenison boy, needed rescue around 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, in the Sunningdale neighborhood after going under water for some time.
Crews provided CPR to the critically injured child before he was taken to the hospital. In an updated news release Sunday, the Kent County medical examiner informed authorities that Ivy later died.
Police still are looking to learn the circumstances leading up to Ivy's death.
A GoFundMe page is set up in the child's name to help the family cover funeral costs.
Police earlier said the child was 7 years old. They corrected the information.
