ALLENDALE, MICH. - Grand Valley State University has added temporary street lights near campus. After recent sexual assaults the school wanted to make safety changes.
"We came in over the weekend and added temporary lights," says Tim Thimmesch of GVSU. "The university did that, this is not university property but it is our students who are out here and we have a concern about their security."
Six temporary street lights have been added to 48th Avenue from Lake Michigan Drive to Pierce Street. Allendale Township was waiting on Consumers Energy to finish a design.
"I would say that we are accelerating the work because of the concern about public safety, we've had a request from Allendale Township on street lights for awhile, the concerns for public safety have accelerated that," says Roger Morgenstern of Consumers Energy.
Permanent street lights will be added at some point. In the meantime, the cost for operating the temporary street lights will be split by GVSU and Consumers Energy.
