SARANAC, MICH. -
Investigators believe they know why two semi-trucks hit head-on near a Saranac gas station in a 3 vehicle crash that killed a truck driver from Hudsonville.
About 10:30 A.M. Wednesday police a 40 year old woman driving a pickup pulled onto East Bluewater from Hawley Highway in front of a semi carrying grain. The semi driver swerved trying to avoid the pickup and smashed head on into a sand truck coming from the other direction.
The sand truck driver, 41 year old Anthony Nunez from Hudsonville, was killed.
When you come down Hawley and pull out from the stop you can’t see coming from the east,” explains Roger Kimble, who lives at the corner. “And that is what happened. She didn’t see anybody and she pulled out in her pickup.”
The crash happened right in front of the Sunoco convenience store at the intersection.
“I looked out and saw the semis collide and I hurried up and hit the emergency shut off for the gas pumps because one semi bounced off the gas pump,” says store clerk Lindsey DeVries.
The woman driving the pickup and her son in the passenger seat were taken to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the other semi was not hurt.
E. Bluewater Highway was closed for nearly 12 hours while crews shoveled up spilled cargo, removed the wreckage and investigated the circumstances of the crash.
