Holland Township: Man shot by Ottawa County officer identified

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, MICH. - The Holland Township man shot by an Ottawa County deputy Wednesday, Nov. 23 has been identified by the Michigan State Police.

An autopsy reveal the man as 43-year-old, David Leroy Thelen from Holland, Mich.

The shooting happened around 8:05 p.m., Wednesday evening at the Beeline Apartments in Holland Township. Ottawa County Undersheriff Steve Kemper says the deputy involved in the shooting was responding to a call on a medical emergency. 

According to previous reports, as the deputy approached the apartment, Thelen came out with a large knife and charged the deputy.

Kemper says that witnesses confirmed that the deputy ordered Thelen several times to drop the knife and when the he refused, the deputy fired three shots, hitting Thelen.

Thelen was pronounced dead at the scene.

A final autopsy and toxicology report will take additional weeks to complete.

The deputy involved in this incident is on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
