Holland Township man dies in officer involved shooting

Police: Deputy kills man armed with knife

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 43-year-old Holland Township man is dead after a shooting involving an Ottawa County Deputy.

It happened at around 8:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Beeline Apartments in Holland Township.  Ottawa County Undersheriff Steve Kempker says the deputy was responding to a call on a medical emergency at the apartment,. As the deputy approached the apartment, Kempker says the man came out holding a large knife and charged the deputy.

According to Kempker, the deputy ordered the man to drop the knife several times, an order Kempker says is confirmed by witnesses. When the man refused, the deputy fired three shots, hitting the man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Kempker says there is no threat to the public.

Investigators believe the suspect is the person that made the 911 call the deputy responded to.

The investigation into the shooting will be done by Michigan State Police.

Kemper says the deputy is on administrative leave, he also added there is no body camera footage.
