Ottawa County sees increase in requests for active shooter training

Ottawa County Sheriff's Department receives request for active shooter training

WEST OLIVE, MICH. - It's a situation no one ever wants to imagine themselves in, but it's one many in Ottawa County want to be prepared for.

"Due to the most recent events of active shooter in churches and even last week in California we're finding we're receiving several calls a week not only active shooter training but as far as church security training as well," said Captain Derek Christensen with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office is responding to those requests and has scheduled an active shooter training on Dec. 18.

The active shooter training course shows people how to appropriately respond to a shooting in any situation whether it be inside a home, business, or workplace.

"This program is fairly simple, it provides general fundamental, thought provoking ideas to avoid a situation if at all possible," Christensen added.

The event is called Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events. It will be held on Dec. 18 from 7-10 p.m. at the Ottawa County Administrative Building, 12220 Fillmore St.
