Relatives: woman injured in pit bull attack recovering

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Criminal charges and a lawsuit may be next for the owner of two pit bulls that attacked a Holland Township woman and her small dog. Both the woman and her pet were injured.

Coen Shults, the grandson of the attacked woman, and family friend Sonia Garcia say the 61-year-old woman and her small Australian shepherd are on the road to recovery, but they will need some time to heal.

Investigators say the attack happened in the woman's backyard on Paw Paw Drive, when the two unleashed pit bills came charging in. When the woman saw them attacking her dog, she got up off her porch and covered the dog with her body.

A neighbor, Bob Winters, says he acted on instinct and tried to subdue the pit bills.

When the two pitbulls would not let up, though, they were shot by police; one of those dogs died and the other, wounded, was taken in by animal control.
