Woman arrested for hit-and-run crash involving bicycle

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 22-year-old Holland woman has been arrested after deputies say she crashed her vehicle into a bicycle rider, asked him if he was okay, and drove away when he said he wasn't.

It happened around 11:42 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016 near the corner of U.S. 31 and Riley Street. Investigators say 31-year-old Timothy Phongkhamtay was headed west on Riley when he was hit by a vehicle turning north on U.S. 31.

After the victim and the driver briefly spoke, she took off. A witness took down her license plate and reported it to police.

The woman was arrested shortly afterwards near the corner of U.S. 31 and Stanton Street. That's more than eight miles north of the scene of the original crash.

The woman's name is being withheld until she's arraigned.

Phongkhamtay was taken to Holland Community Hospital. There's no word on the extent of his injuries, but he is expected to live.
