12 people taken to Kalamazoo-area hospitals after US 131 crash

KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Twelve people -- including seven children -- were taken to area hospitals with various injuries following a crash on U.S. 131.

A southbound vehicle driven by an 18-year-old Kalamazoo man crossed the median and hit two northbound vehicles just after noon Wednesday, June 21, in northwest Kalamazoo County, according to a sheriff's department news release.

The 20-year-old passenger is in critical condition at a Kalamazoo hospital. Police say the children -- their ages ranging from 6 months to 13 years -- all are expected to be OK.

The medical status of the other adults -- aged 18 to 57 years old -- are not known.

Investigators continue to work to figure out what caused the crash.
