People line streets of downtown Kalamazoo for Broncos sendoff

Kalamazoo sends Broncos off to MAC Championship Game

KALAMAZOO, MICH. (WZZM) - On Thursday, dozens of people lined the rainy streets of downtown Kalamazoo for a big sports sendoff.

The Western Michigan University football team is heading to Detroit to play Ohio University Friday night. It's for the MAC, or Mid-American conference, championship game.

The Broncos motorcade rolled down Michigan Avenue shortly after noon on Thursday, greeted by cheering fans.

Sirens were blaring and fans were cheering like nothing was raining on their parade.

"It's my senior year and I'm just so so excited, row the boat," says Jessica Fritz, a senior at Western Michigan University.

"Even if the game wasn't indoors tomorrow, we would still be there, snow, rain, shine," says Karen Pinkham, an employee at Western Michigan University.

While they fought through the wet weather, their team will battle on the field for another win.

"I've always been a Bronco fan, and always will be a Bronco fan," says Mandy Cedillo, Western Michigan University alumni.

Before noon, the undefeated Broncos loaded onto the bus. Then, their motorcade rolls through downtown greeted by cheering fans.

"My husband's the defensive coordinator, we've got to cheer them on," says Pinkham.

"Just so they can see the town is supporting them as they head across state to hopefully win against Ohio," says a Broncos fan.

"I've been here 30 years at Western, lived here all my life, I've never had a similar experience in this town," says another Broncos fan.

It was a downtown celebration and not just for football fans.

"People who don't normally get out for football games are getting out in the community and supporting them," says a Broncos fan.

"It's going to do wonders for Western, it's put us on the map across the country," says Pinkham.

"It's great the community's coming together and showing this support," says Fritz.

The game starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Ford Field in Detroit.
