3 people in jail after stealing car, crashing into 2 police cars

KALAMAZOO, MICH. - Three young adults are sitting in the Kalamazoo County Jail after police say they took a car and crashed it, causing the car to burst into flames.

Two men just before 11 p.m. Friday, March 17, were in the area of West Cedar and South Burdick streets when they were approached by two other men and a woman, according to a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety news release.

One of the suspects demanded the victims' belongings, while the other threatened to shoot them, police say. They were able to get the keys to the car and drive off.

A sergeant spotted the stolen car heading south on South Westnedge Avenue about five minutes later. They attempted to stop the car but it sped off.

Amid a pursuit, the suspects crashed into a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department vehicle and then a Kalamazoo police vehicle. It later crashed into a dead-end at Peekstock Road -- about a 10-minute drive from where the car was stolen.

The driver got out and ran: a K-9 unit quickly tracked him down, the release states. The two other suspects also ran and eventually were caught by police. It's during this chase when an officer sustained a minor injury, police said.

When the vehicle crashed, it caught fire before becoming fully engulfed in flames. It's likely a total loss to its owner; other belongings were returned to the victims.

An 18-year-old Kalamazoo man faces charges of carjacking, conspiracy, fleeing and eluding and resisting and obstructing. A 19-year-old man and 21-year-old woman face similar charges, plus multiple unrelated warrants.

Anyone with additional detail is asked to call Kalamazoo police at 269-337-8139 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
