Police arrest shooting suspect after short standoff situation

KALAMAZOO, MICH. - Police in Kalamazoo responding to a call on shots fired ended the incident with an arrest of a 59-year-old man.

According to Kalamazoo Public Safety, around 3:45 a.m. on Saturday there were shots fired near Oakland Drive. Officers interviewed three victims who say there were shot at, but not injured.

Police continued to investigate the situation and found the suspect's home in the same area. The Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team, Hostage Negotiators and a K9 team were on scene to secure the area and execute a search warrant authorized by the courts.

After more than two hours, police say the SWAT team opened the front bay window to encourage cooperation and communication. The suspect, a 59-year-old Kalamazoo man, surrendered peacefully. The weapon believed to be used in the earlier shooting was not found in the search of his home.

The Kalamazoo man was arrested on multiple counts of felonious assault and is currently lodged in the county jail.

Police will continue to investigate this incident and ask that anyone with information call Kalamazoo Public Safety at 269-337-8994 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
