Police: Kalamazoo teen killed in accidental shooting; other teen shoots self

Police say a shooting that left two teenagers dead in a Kalamazoo alley started with the boys playing with a gun.

KALAMAZOO, MICH. - Two teenagers are dead after being found with gunshot wounds in an alley near the corner of Clinton Avenue and Cameron Street.

Officers got the call around 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5. They say the two 17-year-old boys were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified by police as Marsavious Frazier and Daqarion Hunter, both from Kalamazoo.

A witness told police one of the boys was shot by accident while the gun was being "played with." That's when the second boy became "distraught" and took his own life. Police say evidence at the scene confirms the witness's statements.

Hunter graduated from Loy Norrix High School in June, and Frazier was a Phoenix High School student, Kalamazoo schools superintendent Michael Rice said in a statement. Grief counselors are at both schools to help students and staff.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is denying reports that this was an officer-involved shooting. They say no officers were involved, other than to help the victims and investigate the incident.

Police also said in a press release, "This is a very unfortunate incident and we remind people to be mindful and serious about the proper and legal handling of firearms. The firearm in this incident was not stolen, but it was also not properly registered."

The incident remains under investigation by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
