KALAMAZOO, MICH. - A woman was shot, a public safety officer was assaulted with a bottle, and a gun was pointed at a public safety officer in three separate incidents, early Sunday morning in Kalamazoo.
Just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer was talking to a crowd of people gathered in the road at Greenwood Avenue and Redwood Avenue, when he saw a man waving a gun and pointing it at people in the area.
According to a release from the department, the man then pointed the gun at the officer, then took off. Other officers in the area found the suspect a short time later and were able to arrest him without incident. A loaded revolver was found buried in the dirt by a Public Safety K9.
Police say the man is an 18-year-old from Centreville. He was booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail on several charges, including Felonious Assault on a Police Officer.
Less than two hours later, around 2:22 a.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were managing large crowds in the area of West Michigan Avenue and Euclid Avenue when they say an officer working a traffic post at the intersection was hit in the head with a bottle.
Police say the bottle was thrown by a 25-year-old Kalamazoo man. The officer was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He's expected to be ok.
The man who threw the bottle was known to officers but he was not taken into custody until 1:00 p.m. when he was found by officers on California Avenue between Michigan Avenue and Fraternity Village Drive. He was also booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail on a charge of Felonious Assault on a Police Officer.
At 3:34 a.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the area of Lafayette Avenue and Redwood Avenue to reports of shots being fired from a moving vehicle.
An officer found a car matching the description, speeding before hitting a tree. Police say the offender took off. A loaded, stolen gun was found in the car.
A 21-year-old Sterling Heights woman was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for a single gunshot wound. She's expected to be ok.
A 25-year-old Kalamazoo man was later arrested with the assistance of Kalamazoo Township officers, for carrying a concealed weapon. A 24-year-old Ohio man was also arrested and taken to jail on an outstanding warrant with an ongoing investigation.
