Vigil held for mother and son killed in Kalamazoo murder-suicide

Julina Gibson and her 4-year-old son were victims in a murder-suicide. Their community honored and remembered them at a candlelight vigil.

KALAMAZOO, MICH. - Family and friends of Julina Gibson and her 4-year-old son, Nick, held a vigil on Saturday, Nov. 11 after the two were killed in a murder-suicide on Nov. 9.

The vigil was held at the site of the shooting in Kalamazoo on Emerson Street.

Messages were written to the two victims on two white crosses on display in front of the house. One note read: "I love you TT Julina! You were the best aunt and so supportive of me." Many just simply said: "Love you."

Toys and balloons were placed near the crosses as well.

"If you needed help [Julina] would help you," said Tecia Simpson, whose father has been dating Julina's mother for years. "She loved helping people with special needs. If she was working at the facility that your family member was at, you had no worries."

Nick was pure joy, said Naree Mitchell, Julina's nephew.

"[He was] so fun-loving," Mitchell said. "He was just a ball of energy. I'm just going to miss hearing him call me brother."

Gibson and her son were shot and killed by Gibson's ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Allen Mitchell Jr. Mitchell and Gibson got into an argument, and he pulled out a gun and shot Julina and their son. Mitchell then turned the gun on himself.

Authorities discovered three victims when they got to the home and found Gibson's son still alive, but the two parents were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Kalamazoo Public Safety. The boy, Nicholas Jeffrey Mitchell, died from his injuries later that day at the hospital.

Gibson has another daughter Zariah, 10. Family members and friends said Zariah is a spitting image of Julina, and they will be there for her.

"We're going to hit every dream that she had--even the dreams that Julina had for her" said LaToya Hoskins, a family friend.

The family said organs from the boy will be donated through Gift of Life.

There will be a visitation for both Julina Gibson and her son on Friday, Nov. 17 from 4-8 p.m. at the Langeland Family Funeral Home in Kalamazoo. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Kalamazoo First Assembly of God.
