WMU grad to bicycle across state for crash victims

KALAMAZOO, MICH. - A Western Michigan University graduate is gearing up for a bicycle ride across the state to support the victims and families of a crash near Kalamazoo.

We first told you back in June about the crash in Cooper Township that claimed the lives of five riders and injured four others. They were part of a group called "The Chain Gang" and regularly biked in the area.

John Beach now lives in southeast Michigan but says his heart has always been in Kalamazoo after attending Western.

He's set up a GoFundMe page to collect donations ahead of the ride. The page has a goal of collecting $5,000 dollars.

The ride begins Thursday, Sept. 15 in Port Austin and ends Sunday, Sept 18 in South Haven. Cyclists will make their way through Port Huron, Pinckney and Kalamazoo along the way. The ride will cover about 330 miles total.

Beach says this is not an official fundraising event and there is no cost to join the ride. The ride and donations are completely separate. Anyone is able to join, but everyone is responsible for their own transportation and lodging.
