John the Canuck dies in crash

KENTWOOD, MICH. - Police in  Kent County are investigating after a deadly crash Thursday, Dec. 21.  It happened just before 2 p.m. on Kalamazoo Avenue, just South of 52nd Street in Kentwood. Police say a pickup truck rear ended a car.

Both vehicles left the road and hit several utility poles. Both drivers were taken to the hospital. Police say the driver who was killed was John 'The Canuck' Wiechenthal, 39, from Kentwood. Wiechenthal is a radio personality for 93.7 B-93. He was also an Ionia County 911 Dispatcher; Wiechenthal was the first dispatcher in Ionia to be recognized by Smart911 for using the Smart Save to save someone. He was awarded twice. 

According to the radio station, funeral arrangements have not been made yet. 

The other driver is expected to survive.
