Building floods after semi crashes through it overnight

Nick LSemi driver ticketed after crashyon formally arraigned

WATERVLIET TOWNSHIP, MICH. - The driver of a semi is hurt and so is his passenger after investigators say the man crashed through the outside wall of a building in Berrien County.

Around 2:48 a.m. on Thursday, June 15, the man drove the semi off of I-94 and crashed into Lane Automotive in Watervliet Township, which is northeast of Benton Harbor. Deputies say he may have fallen asleep.

The 31-year-old driver and his 40-year-old passenger, both from Florida, were taken to a hospital in St. Joseph where they're recovering from minor injuries.

It's hard to say how much the damage will cost to fix, but it is extensive. Berrien County deputies say the accident caused the building's fire suppression system to burst and much of the office area was flooded.

The driver is being ticketed for careless driving. The semi carrier was U.S. Express, Inc. out of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
