Eric Knysz dies in hospital; organs donated

JACKSON, Mich. (WZZM) -- Eric Knysz, the man convicted of killing Michigan State Police Trooper Paul K. Butterfield, has died, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Knysz was removed from life support and died at 10:30 a.m. Friday. He had been hospitalized in critical condition after hanging himself in his prison cell Monday afternoon at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson.

Doctors planned to harvest his organs for donation, according to a family spokesperson.

Knysz was sentenced Tuesday, April 8, to life in prison without possibility of parole for first-degree murder. Mason County Sheriff's deputies transported Knysz to the correctional facility last Thursday.
