1 killed in 3-car crash near Lowell

Deputies are investigating a deadly three-vehicle accident this morning in northeastern Kent County.

VERGENNES TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Officials are investigating a three-car, fatal crash in Lowell.

The crash was first reported around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday near Bailey Drive and Parnell Avenue.

Police say the at-fault driver is the one who died in the crash.

Lawrence Haywood, 62 of Ada, stopped at the stop sign at Parnell Avenue before driving into the intersection, where he was hit by a white work van traveling eastbound on Bailey Drive. Haywood was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the van, 39-year-old Martin Herrera, was taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver and another passenger were not injured.

The third vehicle involved, a black Jeep Laredo, was unable to avoid the collision while traveling westbound on Bailey Drive. He was not hurt.
