Alcohol a factor in fatal Lowell crash

LOWELL, Mich. (WZZM) - One woman is dead after a pick-up truck crashed into her Saturday night. 36-year-old Tonya Beha of Lake Odessa was trying to push her van to the side of the road after it ran out of gas on the Alden Nash Avenue bridge over I-96, when the truck struck her and rear-ended the van just after 10 p.m.

The driver of the pick-up, 48-year-old Jay Hobbs, fled the scene on foot, but was later found by police in the woods. Police say Hobbs had been drinking, and is now lodged at the Kent County Jail awaiting multiple charges.

There were seven occupants in the van at the time of the crash, including several children; all were taken to the hospital.

Witnesses are asked to call Trooper Surbrook at (616) 866-4411
