Man charged with stomping cat to death

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Cedar Springs man has been charged with animal cruelty causing death after killing a cat by stomping on it Monday afternoon.

Michael Stackhouse, 35, was arrested Wednesday night and has been released on bond.

Stackhouse says he was just providing a merciful death for a neighbor's cat he had accidentally injured, when it jumped over a door barrier and began fighting with his two small dogs.

Stackhouse says the cat climbed under a bed and as he was removing it, he accidentally broke the animal's neck.

But neighbors say they witnessed something entirely different, claiming Stackhouse violently shook the animal, intentionally breaking its neck. He then threw the animal outside, in front of neighbors and children, and crushed its skull with his foot.

Stackhouse has a criminal history and police say that enhances the felony charge to more time behind bars.
