'Be a Santa to a Senior' this holiday season

Be a Santa to a senior this Christmas

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Before you head out to do your holiday shopping, Home Instead Senior Care wants you to keep seniors in your community in mind.

From Nov. 11 to Dec. 12, they are holding their "Be a Santa to a Senior" event. It provides gifts and companionship to seniors who may be isolated from friends or family during the holiday season.

"The holidays can be a troubling time for seniors. They may feel the absence or the distance of loved ones," said program coordinator Mary Beth Barkeley in a news release.

"Be a Santa to a Senior provides a ray of hope for many seniors, and it means so much for them to know that people care and value them as members of our community."

You can pick up a paper ornament from a participating store with the name of a senior near you, and a requested gift for them. When you buy that item and return it to the store, community volunteers will wrap and deliver the gifts.

Here is a list of participating locations in the Grand Rapids area:

  • SarahCare - 2024 Heath Drive SW Wyoming, MI

  • SarahCare - 2211 E. Beltline Ave Grand Rapids, MI

  • Kentwood Senior Center 355 - 48th Street Kentwood, MI

  • Walmart - 4542 Kenowa Ave SW, Grandville, MI
