Body of missing fisherman recovered from Thornapple River

Divers have recovered the body of a 45-year-old fisherman who went missing in the Thornapple River yesterday.

CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Police recovered the body of a missing fisherman just before noon Monday, Sept. 5, from the Thornapple River.

The 45-year-old Kentwood man, identified as Nijaz Mulac, was fishing Sunday with his 14-year-old son in the river, just south of the bridge over 68th Street near Ruehs Park.

Police say the son saw his father in distress in the water and then go under.

Multiple agencies, including Kent County Sheriff's deputies, along with the dive team and marine patrol units, Caledonia Fire Department and Cascade Fire department responded to the scene. They searched the area, both on the water and along the shoreline, without success into the late evening Sunday.

The search resumed Monday, with crews in the river to find the man. The combined efforts of the agencies were able to recover the body of Mulac in the river near 68th Street.
