Elderly passenger killed in Grand Rapids Twp. crash

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- An 87-year-old woman was killed following a traffic crash Tuesday morning.

Kent County sheriff's deputies say around 8 a.m., a 2007 Honda Accord, driven by 90-year-old Calvin Kappes, turned left into the path of a 2002 GMC Yukon at the intersection of Forest Hill Ave. and Cascade Rd. SE.

The Yukon struck the Accord on the passenger side, injuring the driver and his wife, 87-year-old Hope Kappes; she died later at the hospital.

Kappes injuries were said to be non life-threatening. The other driver, 17-year-old Jessica McDaniels had minor injured.

Investigators say all were wearing seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
