GRandJazzFest announces 2016 lineup

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. (WZZM) - Eleven acts fill the lineup for a two-day jazz festival returning to downtown Grand Rapids this summer.

GRandJazzFest organizers on Wednesday night announced the lineup for the August 20-21 event. The lineup announcement coincided with International Jazz Day events taking place around the world.

Trumpeter Cindy Bradley headlines the event, the first woman to do so. The New York City-based artist will perform on the Saturday night. Los Angeles guitarist Chris Standring headlines the Sunday night performances.

Some West Michigan musicians are on the schedule, as well, including the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra with vocalist Edye Evans Hyde, who will open the event. They're known for some original compositions and arrangements, and they play some standards, too. Lakeshore Big Band, from Spring Lake, is also on the schedule with a repertoire of swing, classic and contemporary jazz, ballroom dance, and popular music.

The Lansing-based group organissimo is also in the lineup; its members play an eclectic mix infused with funk, gospel, blues, rock, and Latin sounds.

The rest of the lineup includes:

  • Tumbao Bravo
  • Steve Hilger
  • Tim Bowman
  • Bierenga-Sullivan Quintet, the student showcase band
  • Urban Jazz Coalition
  • Walter White

This year's is the fifth annual GRandJazzFest. Performances will be at Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids. DTE Energy Foundation is the presenting sponsor.

The lineup was announced at H.O.M.E. in the B.O.B., a venue which on Wednesday nights regularly features musicians including jazz artists.
