Kent County Sheriff's Department to get new K-9 with kennel club donation

There soon will be a new K-9 with the Kent County Sheriffs department.

WALKER, MICH. - There soon will be a new K-9 with the Kent County Sheriff's Department, thanks to the Grand Rapids Kennel Club.

The club donated $12,500 to the department Saturday, April 1, during the annual Pet Expo at the Deltaplex Arena -- the cost for a new dog.

"The community engages so well with law enforcement with an animal," Kent County Sherriff Larry Stelma said. "Of course the dogs are a great attractor to kids, to children, in schools, as well as being a tremendous partner to the officers and a tremendous resource when crimes occur."

The sheriff's department currently has two patrol dogs, two corrections dogs and on therapy dog already on staff.

Grand Rapids' kennel club was founded nearly 100 years ago.
