Long winter leaves many homes damaged

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It was one of the worst winters on record and homeowners are paying the price. Many roofs have been damaged by ice and snow.

Barry Schweitzer does drywall and is a painter and he's been busy the past few weeks. Tuesday, he was called to a house in Grand Rapids because of water damage to the wall.

"I would say the water came in from the roof damage, ice gets under shingles, comes in through your house."

It's not a difficult fix, but it will cost a fair amount money. Schweitzer says to contact your insurance company to see what kind of roof damage is covered on your policy. You should also figure out what caused the problem. "I always recommend with water damage, getting your roof checked out, always."

Here's why: during the winter, it's hard to see the roof. The problem could have been caused by damaged shingles or from a lack of insulation in your attic.

The goal is to make sure it doesn't happen again next year. To contact Barry at Schweitzer's Specialties, you can e-mail him at ssdrywall@att.net or call him at (616) 890-6940.
