GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A West Michigan expert says when responding to dangerous situations, you don't rise to the occasion -- you sink to the level of your training.
That's why, after working as a police officer and then ten years as a Secret Service agent, Jason Russell founded Secure Education Consultants, based in Caledonia.
The company trains employees about how to respond if there's a violent intruder in their workplace.
"We're willing to train for fire and we're willing to do fire drills, but we have a pretty hard time accepting that these violent attacks can happen and preparing for those," Russell said. "So what we focus on with our clients is the importance of training, preparing yourself, preparing your staff, because when you're prepared you feel more confident that you can handle a situation, and in reality you actually can handle the situation better."
Russell also tells his clients to look out for people wearing clothing that doesn't match the environment, someone testing security, or loitering regularly near a workplace. Those can all be indicators someone could be planning a violent attack.
