Woman, 60, killed in fiery Byron Township crash

The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously hurt.

BYRON TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 60-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash just off U.S. 131 and 76th Street SW.

Police and firefighters responded around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, to the crash at 76th Street and Caterpillar Court SW, where they found the woman pinned inside their vehicle, according to a Kent County Sheriff's Department news release.

The engine compartment was on fire, prompting deputies to assist firefighters in putting it out.

Police identified the driver as Melinda Farias of Gaines Township. Witnesses told police the vehicle she was driving did not stop at the stop sign, and it was hit by an eastbound vehicle driven by a 28-year-old Byron Center woman.
