89-year-old man dies in West Michigan boating accident

LEROY TOWNSHIP, MICH. - An 89-year-old man was found drowned in Sonoma Lake on Monday.

Michigan State Police at Marshall said they were called to the lake at 3:50 p.m. when witnesses saw debris floating where they'd a few minutes earlier seen a boat on the lake.

Calhoun County sheriff deputies were called to the scene as well. The county marine unit found a boat submerged in the lake and called for the Calhoun County Area Law Enforcement Underwater Recovery Team to help search the lake. The dive team found the body of Theron Stults, 89, in the lake.

Also helping at the scene were the Athens, Leroy and Newton township fire departments and LifeCare Ambulance.

MSP was assisted by Calhoun County Sherriff’s Deputies, Calhoun County Area Law Enforcement Underwater Recovery Team (ALURT), Athens Township Fire Department, Leroy Township Fire Department, and Newton Township Fire Department, and LifeCare Ambulance.
