A driver traveling on the Southfield Freeway toward I-96 found out the hard way Wednesday morning that it’s important to slow down during slick, icy road conditions.
A Michigan State Police dash cam caught the harrowing video at 10:30 a.m. MSP put the video on its Twitter account as a warning. No one was injured, but it sure looked scary and the driver was cited for numerous violations.
“A trooper was writing a crash that occurred on I-96 in the express lane and this individual came down the ramp from southbound Southfield too fast, lost control of the vehicle and hit the tow truck,’’ said Lt. Mike Shaw.
Luckily the tow truck driver, the state trooper and the two drivers involved in the accident all walked away uninjured.
“As you can tell from the video the tow truck driver actually ran into the lanes of travel and he was pretty lucky that another car wasn’t traveling in the right lane or else he would’ve been hit by that car,’’ said Shaw. “He was cited for violation of basic speed law, driving too fast for road conditions and violation of Michigan’s emergency vehicle move-over law.’’
The lesson: slow down.
“One of the things that we’ve been talking about this year is slowing it down in inclement weather and also giving emergency vehicles a lane like the Michigan law requires,’’ said Shaw. “This guy failed in both.’’
