School principal, son laid to rest

WESTPHALIA, MICH. - The West Michigan elementary school principal and his son who were found dead earlier this week, have been laid to rest.

The bodies of 52-year old George Heckman and his 28-year old son Grant were found in a van in Montcalm County on Monday.

Investigators said it appeared to be a murder-suicide in which George Heckman shot his son and then himself. They were found on Monday night in a parked van in Montcalm County.

Heckman was the the prinicpal at Pewamo Elementary School and was recently appointed as superintendent of the Pewamo-Westphalia School District -- he was to start the position on July 1. 

School officials previously told WZZM 13 that Grant was disabled and required 24-hour care, saying he and his father were inseparable.

Funerals for the two men were held on Friday, June 23 at Saint Mary's Church in Westphalia.
