2 injured after small plane crash

WATERVLIET TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A Fruitport man and his co-pilot were able to remove themselves from a downed plane.

Edward Maloney, a 27-year-old resident from Fruitport, and Jonathan Amundsen, a 36-year-old Winterhaven, Fla., man, sustained serious injuries in a plane crash at the Watervliet Municipal Airport, according to a Berrien County Sheriff's Department news release.

Rescuers were called around 7:21 p.m. Friday, June 16.

An early investigation shows a small aircraft departing the airport did not reach the necessary altitude to take off and crashed into a wooded area near the runway.

Maloney and Amundsen were able to get out of the plane without help. However, both were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Members of the Federal Aviation Administration continues to investigate the crash.
