Grand Rapids man drowns in Torch Lake

CLEARWATER TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A Grand Rapids man drowned during the weekend while trying to retrieve a toy back to his family's boat.

Steven Iwaniw, 53, was boating during the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 4, on Torch Lake with his family, according to a Kalkaska County Sheriff's Department news release. He swam about 20 feet from the boat to retrieve the toy when he started to struggle in the water.

Iwaniw tried to swim back to the boat was not able to do so, and he went underwater for about 30 seconds, police said. A 10-year-old relative swam to Iwaniw to get him above the water's surface.

Family was able to pull him onto the boat to begin CPR but efforts were not successful.

Medical personnel pronounced Iwaniw dead at a local hospital.
