Happy birthday, Mackinac Bridge: 59 years young!

Michigan's most famous piece of infrastructure — the Mackinac Bridge — celebrates its 59th birthday today.

The elegant suspension bridge linking the Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula opened on Nov. 1, 1957; millions of vehicles have passed over its decks since then.

We can't think of a better way to celebrate the bridge than to revisit some fabulous photos.

Former Lansing State Journal photographer Rod Sanford made to the top of a bridge tower along with a maintenance crew for this series of photos.

Here's a favorite photo of weather that can make driving treacherous on the bridge.

And finally, a 360-degree look from the annual Labor Day bridge walk.
