Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore gets its own quarter

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is getting its own quarter.

The U.S. Mint has announced that the Michigan landmark was selected for its "America the Beautiful" Quarters Program. The coin, with an image of Chapel Rock, is expected to make its debut in February.

The design was unveiled today at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money Trade Show in Denver, Colo.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior was established in 1966 as the country's first national lakeshore.

A posting on the U.S. Mint's website highlights its beauty: "The shoreline consists of 200-foot-high colorful sandstone cliffs, numerous beaches, and 300-foot-tall sand dunes. The shoreline is bordered by boreal and eastern hardwood forests with numerous waterfalls, streams, and lakes."

In 2010, The U.S. Mint began issuing a series of 56 quarters depicting national parks and other national treasures. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore coin will be No. 41 in the series.
