Police investigating threat against student wearing a hijab

ANN ARBOR, MICH. - Police in Ann Arbor are investigating a report of a man who threatened to set a Muslim student on fire if she didn't remove her hijab.

The incident near the University of Michigan campus was reported to have happened Friday evening.

Ann Arbor police Sgt. Patrick Maguire said Saturday the department is "investigating it actively ... and soliciting information from anyone who may have witnessed anything."

A hijab is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women. A crime alert issued by the university said the woman took off her hijab and left the area.

The man who threatened her is described by witnesses as white with an "unkempt appearance" and "intoxicated with slurred speech."

Reports of threats, intimidation and racially charged violence have spiked since Tuesday's presidential election.
