'Redskins' name dropped: Belding school board votes unanimously

After years of debate and discussion, the Belding schools board of education decided the district will stop using "Redskin" as their school mascot.

BELDING, MICH. - In an unanimous vote, the Belding Area Schools Board of Education decided to change its "Redskins" mascot.

It is not yet known what mascot the school system will embrace next.

School officials called the meeting Monday, Dec. 19, to be set a month ago, saying most attendees wanted to drop the "Redskins" name because it is a derogatory term.

According to The Daily News, the first instance of the Belding Redskin appeared in high school yearbooks with the class of 1940-1941. That was the year the first edition of “The Redskin” yearbook was published.
