School leaders to drivers: Watch out for kids on first day of school

Grand Rapids Public School leaders say it's going to take an entire community to keep more than 17,000 kids safe when they return to class tomorrow.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Grand Rapids Public School leaders say it's going to take an entire community to keep more than 17,000 kids safe when they return to class Tuesday.

Across the rest of Kent County, more than 100,000 students will head back to school. This past week, police and school administrators talked about how important safety will be on the first day and throughout the year.

Officials remind all motorists to be aware of the sudden influx of children walking and riding bikes. When a school bus stops and flashes its lights, don't pass it.

Students also are asked not to wear their earbuds while walking, and those on bikes should wear helmets.
