GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Gone but not forgotten.
That’s what many faculty members, students and parents at Forest Hills Northern High School say about former punter Mike Sadler. Sadler graduated from Northern in 2010, was a 4 time All American at Michigan State and was headed to law school.
But in July he was killed in a car crash.
Friday night at Northern’s football game he was honored during halftime ceremonies.
“He was so much more than an athlete and a scholar,” explains school principal Jon Gregory. “Just a great human being. So we thought it only appropriate to honor his memory.”
“And Michael should be here,” his mother Karen told the crowd. “He would be so proud and so humbled to see what I’m seeing right now. Northern will always be home to him and he was so proud of that. Thank you so much. Go Huskies.”
The large “spirit rock” between the stadium and the player’s locker room at Northern is also painted in honor of Mike Sadler. The team gathers around the rock before each home game for inspiration and motivation.
“What he meant to Northern High School and our community was just outstanding,” says Gregory.
