GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Wednesday, June 8 was National Running Day and people celebrated in many different ways.
Cedar Springs native, Ted Sabinas, is celebrating his favorite hobby the only way he knows how. He's running 3.1 miles, something he's done every day for more than 26 years. It's part of what is called "streak running."
"The only thing I can't do as a 65 year old that I could have done when I was 30 is run as fast," Sabinas joked. "That's pretty crucial for me to stay fit enough to enjoy an active lifestyle."
Sabinas coached cross country for more than 20 years at Cedar Springs High School where he also taught science. He approaches his running the same way he asked his runners to, set small goals in order to reach a bigger one.
"One thing I say, it's not about speed, it's not about distance, it's about moving," said Sabinas.
For those who might have an interest in running but don't know how to get started, the veteran has some advice.
"The worst step is the first step," said Sabinas. "If you can get yourself out there and realize I don't have to run 10 miles, I don't have to run 5 miles, I'm just going to run and go wherever it takes me."
The official definition of a running streak, as adopted by the Streak Runners International, Inc., and United States Running Streak Association, Inc., is to run at least one mile within each calendar day. Running may occur on either the roads, a track, over hill and dale or on a treadmill.
