MUSKEGON, MICH. - The City of Muskegon has been awarded $1 million to clean up the former Sappi Paper Mill site.
The grant will pay for the removal of asbestos paint on the exterior of two exhaust stacks, as well as demolition of the stacks to make room for 120-acre property of Windward Pointe -- a mixed-use development featuring residential, commercial and community uses.
Pure Muskegon, an investor group comprising local business and community leaders, purchased the former Sappi Paper Mill site in Muskegon from Melching, a demolition company.
It is estimated that over the course of this massive redevelopment project, nearly 200 jobs will be created.
