Husband and wife killed in US 31 crash near Muskegon

Blown tire causes deadly crash

DALTON TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A husband and wife are dead and their adult daughter is injured following a crash on U.S. 31, apparently as a result of a blown tire.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, on northbound U.S. 31 between Russell Rd. and Lakewood Rd.  Muskegon County deputies say a GMC Minivan driven by 60-year-old Larry Junior Drake was passing a semi when the rear passenger tire blew.  The van rolled several times into the center median and hit a tree.

Drake and his wife 53-year-old Wanda Faye Drake died in the crash.  Their daughter Wanda Foster was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.

Deputies say it does not appear alcohol, drugs, speed, or distracted driving played a role in the accident.

The highway since has reopened to traffic.
